What’s the difference between an Open Gym and a Tryout?
Open Gym
- Open gyms are optional practice-style sessions hosted by clubs.
- They give athletes a chance to get extra touches on the ball, meet coaches, and get a feel for the club environment.
- Coaches may use open gyms to see prospective athletes in action, but they are not formal evaluations.
- Attending an open gym is not a requirement for being selected to a team and does not guarantee a roster spot.
Tryout
- Tryouts are the official evaluation sessions where coaches assess athletes’ skills, teamwork, and potential fit for their program.
- Volleyball Alberta only permits clubs to hold tryouts during specific Fall and Winter tryout periods.
- Athletes can only be offered a roster spot (via a Letter of Intent) during these sanctioned tryout windows.
- Tryouts are where final team selections are made, and attendance is required if an athlete wants to be considered for a spot.
In short:
- Open Gym = informal, fun, get-to-know-you session
- Tryout = formal evaluation and team selection
